This course is designed for individuals with little or no experience who need to attain a forklift licence.

This course is nationally recognised (LF) and is conducted by experienced trainers/assessors who provided supervised experience in driving a conventional forklift.

Over the duration of this course, participants are taught how to perform safety checks and safely operate a forklift with the intention of obtaining their forklift licence.

Course duration is 3 days.

Days one and two are allocated to training and involve a significant amount of time on both the theory and practical knowledge components required to prepare the participant for the assessments which are taken place on day three.

Course Structure:

  • OHS Legislation, Compliance & Regulations
  • Hazard Identification & Site Evaluation
  • Risk Management
  • Pre & Post Operational Checks
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Correct Procedures – I.E. Correct Speeds, Stability of Loads etc
  • Forklift Awareness – Awkward Loads, High Stacks, Negotiating Obstacles
  • Lifting Pallets, Refuelling, Parking
  • Duty of Care
  • Theory & Practical Training
  • Full written and performance assessments

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a Statement of Attainment plus a verification of their assessment (AS1 Form). Once they have received these items of evidence, they will need to apply on line at Worksafe for the high risk work licence.

Where students are not able to attend the full 3 day training course and they have access to a forklift in their workplace, they may be able to attend the formal training and logbook set up on one day and make arrangements for assessments at a later date.

Once set up on the logbook students are able to operate a forklift under the supervision of an appropriately licensed operator. Please talk to an AIT representative about this option for training.

Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other arms that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground, but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.

A person performing this work is required to hold a forklift truck high risk work (HRW) licence.

This unit requires a person operating a forklift truck to plan the work, conduct routine checks on a forklift truck, shift loads in a safe manner, and safely shut down and secure equipment after completing operations.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

This unit is based on the licensing requirements of Part 4.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, HRW and meets Commonwealth, state and territory HRW licensing requirements.
